What is an EnOcean Equipment Profile (EEP) in relation to Echoflex Product?

Question

My Echoflex equipment references different EnOcean Equipment Profiles (EEPs) depending on the type of equipment. What do these profiles mean?

Answer

Very basically, think of the EEP as a classification, or a way to identify what category of equipment your device falls under.

Echoflex devices communicate wirelessly using wireless radios developed by EnOcean. To get devices to recognize each other and communicate, you need to link them (for linking steps, see this article). When you link the devices, the transmitter introduces itself to the receiver with its assigned EEP, kind of like a handshake and "Hi my name is XXX". The EEP allows the receiver to identify what kind of device the transmitter is, what type of telegrams (wireless messages) to expect from it, and how to interpret those messages.

So for example, there are several flavors of Echoflex occupancy/vacancy sensors (MOS, ROS, OWS, RCS, RVS, etc), but they all share the same EEP of A5-07-01 as they all identify as occupancy and/or vacancy sensors and receiver controllers will interpret their telegrams as such.

That being said, some devices can have multiple possible EEPs. Depending on the way you want the device to function, you will need to assign that at the device. For example, the Echoflex Contact Input Interface can be set up as an occupancy sensor, photo/light sensor, or switch, and each of those identities will use a different EEP.

Note-Icon.png Not all Echoflex devices are compatible and capable of linking together. Control transmitters (sensors and switches) will have their EEP assignment called out in their datasheets, and output receivers (power pack controllers) will have a chart of EEPs they support in their datasheets.

An EEP is broken down into 3 hexadecimal parts (like the above example of A5-07-01):

  • RORG: the EnOcean Radio Protocol (ERP) telegram type, what type of telegram it sends
  • FUNC: basic functionality of the data content, what does it do
  • TYPE: type of device in its individual characteristics, what specific type of equipment is it
