Explanation
This article will walk you through how to replace or reseat the NVMe solid state drive (SSD) in your Gio@5 Win10.
While the internal design of the Win7 Gio@5 is similar, the motherboard is different and so the M.2 SATA is located in a different place. The SSD is not interchangeable between Win7 and Win10 ETC Consoles.
Procedure
II – Open the Console
Overview
This procedure is used to open an Eos Ti, Gio, Gio@5, Cobalt 20 or Cobalt 10 console. The common reasons to open the console are to check the USB connections and to re-seat the memory. If additional issues arise, contact ETC Technical Services for more information.
- For front: Large flat-head screwdriver
- For rear: #1 Philips screwdriver
Procedure
Disconnect power and other connections from the console before performing any service work.
To open the front bottom tray
- Ensure the screens are in the fully down position
- Using the flat head screwdriver, turn the 2x ¼-turn screws on the underside of the unit
- Lift up the control panel
To open the rear bottom tray
- Ensure the screens are in the fully upright position
- Remove the 14 screws (10 on Gio/Cobalt 10; 9 on Gio@5) on the back panel, and remove back panel [N.B. Display panel hidden in image below]
Note: these screws can become stripped easily. Replacements are ETC Part# HWM1851 SCR M3 x 6mm PHFHMS ST BL ZC w/LT PATCH

III – Replace the Drive
The NVMe SSD is located on the main carrier board underneath of the DisplayPort connector

- Press the release feature of the DisplayPort connector to disconnect it. Avoid damaging the components directly underneath this connector, the DisplayPort cable, and the metal core ferrite that is mounted on the DisplayPort cable.
- Drape the DisplayPort cable away from the motherboard to reveal the SSD.

- Use a Phillips #1 driver to remove the screw which holds the SSD in place
- The NVMe SSD should pop up to about a 30 degree angle. Pull the drive out.
If reseating the drive, reinsert the drive at the same angle.
If replacing the drive, insert the new drive at the same angle.
-
Replace the screw to push the NVMe SSD down. Make sure to fully hand-tighten the screw to ensure a good connection between the drive and motherboard.
-
Plug the DisplayPort cable back in.
-
Close the console and replace all screws.
