Ion Xe Initializes Three Times Before Booting

Symptoms

The blue power button on my console is illuminated at all times, even when the console is powered on.

When the power button is pressed to turn the console on, the console will initialize three times before fully powering on. The ETC splash screen will be displayed on the monitor three times during this process, and the keyboard backlight may also flash three times. The console will take longer than normal to boot as a result.

The console also may also lose time and date information when powered off, and revert to an earlier time and date when powered back on.

On a Puck, an American Megatrends "CMOS checksum bad" screen may be displayed prior to booting.

Description

Consoles use a small internal CMOS battery (also called a BIOS battery) to store date and time information and BIOS settings while the console is powered off.

If this battery has become drained, it will result in the behavior described above. Note that this will not interfere with operation of the console apart from the above symptoms.

Fix

The CMOS battery needs to be replaced. The exact battery needed depends on the console type. See this article for more information:

CMOS (BIOS) Battery Information

After replacing the battery, power the console on and set the date and time.

After replacing the battery, the console will initialize three times on the first boot. On subsequent boots, it will intialize only once.
