Yellow "?" in Channels

Symptoms/Issue

Some channels display a yellow "?" in their tombstone or entry in patch.

Description/Explanation of Issue

Yellow "?" indicates that there is an RDM warning message associated with that channel. This is commonly due to the fixture having been initially patched via RDM, but the system cannot see the fixture.

Fix/Solution

  1. Check the error by selecting the fixture's starting address and pressing [About]. If the error reports that the fixture is offline:
  2. Confirm that RDM is enabled, either locally or at the gateway providing DMX to the fixture. See this article for information on troubleshooting local RDM.
  3. Confirm that RDM is enabled in the Interface Protocols section of the Network settings in the console shell.
  4. If RDM is enabled in both places, try troubleshooting your DMX cabling--bad DMX cables can in some cases control fixtures without issue while preventing proper RDM communication.
