Portable Appliance Testing Guide for ETC Equipment

This article refers to CE versions of products, with a focus on UK PAT testing regulations

This article is intended as a guide for a suitably skilled electrician to perform regular electrical inspection and testing on portable ETC equipment.

Any advice and values given here should be confirmed with a suitably skilled, trained and experienced electrician.

 

Source 4 luminaire (Incandescent)
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK would be BS EN 60309-2 or BS 1363 or BS 546)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
    • Ensure the ceramic lamp holder is intact and secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • There is an, unpainted, earth tag on the back of the reflector housing assembly
    • Expected result of <=0.2ohm, but an allowed result of <=0.5ohm (BS EN 60598-1)
  • Insulation resistance
    • At 500vDC, expected result of >= 1.0Mohm
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    •  Expected result of 0mA
Source 4 and ColorSource luminaire (LED)
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK would be BS EN 60309-2 or BS 1363 or BS 546)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • DO NOT exceed 200mA during this test
    • There is an, unpainted, earth tag on the back of the reflector housing assembly
    • Expected result of <=0.2ohm, but an allowed result of <=0.5ohm (BS EN 60598-1)
  • Insulation resistance
    • Do not perform
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    • Expected result of <=2mA (BS EN 60598-1)
Source 4 Mini luminaire (LED and Incandescent) - See also IEC Cables
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK would be BS EN 60309-2 or BS 1363 or BS 546)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • The device is Class II
  • Insulation resistance
    • Do not perform
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    • Expected touch current result of <=0.25mA
Portable Dimmers (i.e. Smartpack, Source 4 Dimmer)
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK would be BS EN 60309-2)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • There is an earth point located on the rear of the device
    • Plug PE to chassis expected result of <=0.2ohm
    • Plug PE to load connector PE expected result of <=0.2ohm
  • Insulation resistance
    • At 500vDC, expected result of >= 1.0Mohm
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    • Expected result of <=10mA
Consoles w/Internal PSU (ION, EOS, Congo, Cobalt, etc) - See also IEC Cables
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK would be BS EN 60309-2 or BS 1363)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • DO NOT exceed 200mA during this test
    • There is an unpainted section of metal avliableon the rear.
    • Expected result of <=0.2ohm
  • Insulation resistance
    • Do not perform
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    • Expected result of <=3.5mA
Devices w/External PSU (Smartfade, ColorSource Console, Gateways) - See also IEC Cables
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK BS 1363)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • The device is Class II
  • Insulation resistance
    • Do not perform
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    • Expected touch current result of <=0.25mA
IEC Cables
  • Visual inspection
    • Ensure the plug is region appropriate (UK would be BS EN 60309-2 or BS 1363 or BS 546)
    • Ensure the plug terminals are secure
    • Ensure the cable assembly is free from damage
    • Ensure the cable entry gland is secure
  • Earth bond and continuity
    • Expected result of <=0.1ohm
  • Insulation resistance
    • At 500vDC, expected result of >= 1.0Mohm
  • Protective conductor or touch current
    •  Expected result of 0mA
