Response Gateway Screen Artifacts
Overview
There are several distinct issues that can cause artifacts, glitching, or corruption on the display of various Response gateways. These issues may differ only subtly in their symptoms, so read this article carefully to determine which issue you are experiencing and how to resolve it. Additionally, not all types of Response gateway are subject to every issue; pay close attention to the "Gateways affected" sections below to avoid confusion between similar issues.
Issue 1: Vertical white line, static "snow" or dead pixels
This issue presents in two distinct ways based on gateway type, but both are caused by the same underlying problem and can be resolved in the same way.
Issue 1A: Vertical white line
Gateways affected
- Response Mk2 DMX gateway
- Response Mk2 CPU2 DMX gateway
Symptoms
On my Response Mk2 DMX gateway, there is a vertical white line visible on the screen, about two-thirds of the way towards the right edge of the screen.

Issue 1B: Static "snow" or dead pixels
Gateways affected
- Response MIDI gateway
- Response SMPTE gateway
- Response Serial gateway
- Response Analog IO gateway
- Response SnapBack
- Response 0-10V gateway
Symptoms
The text on the display appears scrambled or corrupted, with random black or white pixels scattered across the screen. The pattern is relatively static and does not change rapidly. It is visible both on the main status display screen and within the menu.

Description
In June 2026, the OLED screen used in all Response gateways went obsolete and was replaced by a new component. To support this new OLED screen, new gateway software versions were released. Any gateway with the new OLED screen will have an indication on its serial number sticker showing the lowest supported software version by that gateway.

Gateways should not be downgraded below the version indicated. If they are downgraded below the indicated version, the display issues shown above may occur.

Existing gateways with the older OLED screen can be upgraded to the newer software versions without issues. These versions are fully compatible with both types of OLED screen. |
Fix
Update the gateway to the minimum version shown above (or higher) using UpdaterAtor 7.0.1 or later.
If you have trouble with this process, or if the display issues persist after updating, contact ETC Technical Services.
Issue 2: Dynamic "snow" or dead pixels
Gateways affected
- Response MIDI gateway
- Response SMPTE gateway
- Response Serial gateway
- Response Analog IO gateway
- Response SnapBack
Symptoms
Random pixels on the display turn on or off rapidly while on the main status display screen. After pressing the [✓] button to enter the main menu, the issue stops; it only occurs on the main status display screen.

Description
This issue is caused by an unexpected interaction of the gateway software with the newer OLED displays. It only appears on gateways with the new displays, and may not always appear. Operation of the gateway is not affected apart from the minor visual effects shown above.
This issue is currently under investigation and will be addressed in a future software release.
Issue 3: White blocks on display
Gateways affected
- Response Mk2 4-port DMX gateway, rackmount models
- Response Mk2 CPU2 4-port DMX gateway, rackmount models
- Response Mk2 8-port DMX gateway
Symptoms
White blocks appear on the main status screen. Where there should be visible numbers indicating the status of each DMX port, only a solid white block is visible instead.

Description
This issue may be caused by a loose ribbon cable inside the gateway. If you see this issue, you can open the gateway and attempt to reconnect this ribbon cable.
Fix
- On the underside of the gateway, use a Phillips #1 screwdriver to remove the 8 screws indicated below. Slide the gateway board out of the metal cover.

- Locate the display ribbon cable, indicated below.

- Reseat the end of the ribbon cable connecting to the gateway's main board.
- Carefully disengage the plastic latch by flipping it upwards.
- Remove the ribbon cable from the slot.
- Reinsert the ribbon cable into the slot, making sure to keep it straight, and insert it as far as possible.
- Re-engage the plastic latch by flipping it back down.
- Use an M5.5 nutdriver to remove the four indicated nuts securing the UI board to the front of the gateway shell.

- Reseat the other end of the ribbon cable connecting to the front of the UI board, following the same procedure as before.

- Reattach the UI board to the front of the gateway shell using the four removed nuts.
- Slide the gateway board back into its cover and replace the eight removed screws.
If display issues persist after reseating the ribbon cable, please contact ETC Technical Services. It may be necessary to send the gateway in for service to have its screen replaced.
