Encoder Information - FSMS/VSMS

There are multiple encoder options that can be used with ETC Rigging 3rd Party Controls.

Fixed Speed Motor Starter (FSMS):

  • TTL Encoder (Differential Signal, preferred)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • 5V Signal
  • HTL or Line Driver Encoder (Single Ended Signal)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • If encoder cannot run at 5 VDC an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card is required
  • HTL or Line Driver Encoder (Differential Signal)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • If encoder cannot run at 5 VDC an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card is required, does not use differential signals
  • Quadrature Encoder (Single Ended Signal, preferred)
    • 5 VDC Supply
    • 5V Signal
  • 10k Analog Pot
    • Not recommended

Variable Speed Motor Starter (VSMS):

  • TTL Encoder (Differential Signal, preferred)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • 5V Signal
  • HTL or Line Driver Encoder (Single Ended Signal)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • If encoder cannot run at 5 VDC an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card is required
  • HTL or Line Driver Encoder (Differential Signal)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • If encoder cannot run at 5 VDC an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card is required, does not use differential signals
  • 10k Analog Pot
    • For use with SoftLift Fixed Speed Control Only, not reccommended.

Motor Control Interface (MCI):

  • TTL Encoder (Differential Signal, preferred)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • 5V Signal
  • HTL or Line Driver Encoder (Single Ended Signal)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • If encoder cannot run at 5 VDC an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card is required
  • HTL or Line Driver Encoder (Differential Signal)
    • 5-30 VDC Supply
    • If encoder cannot run at 5 VDC an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card is required, does not use differential signals
  • 10k Analog Pot
    • Not reccommended
  • Note: A motor or dum encoder is required when the 0-10V analog speed control on MCI is being used in a (non-overhead lifting) variable speed application (ie curtain machines, etc.).

ETC recommends using an encoder with a minimum resolution of 1024 pulses/rotation.

ETC recommends using Belden 9728 or equivalent for encoder field wiring.

Encoder Type Signal Level Supply Voltage Signal Output Voltage
TTL High 4.75 - 30 VDC 3V Min (5V Max)
  Low 4.75 - 30 VDC 0.5V Max
HTL* High 4.75 - 9 VDC 3V Min
  High 9 - 30 VDC Supply Voltage - 3V (Min)
  Low 4.75 - 30 VDC 0.5V Max

*Requires an HTL -> TTL Conversion Card
