AIS Keyboard Retrofit Kits

There are two keycap mounting styles used on Eos Family console keyboards; Cherry and AIS. The AIS mounting style is used only on AIS keycaps. The Cherry mounting style is used on all other keycaps. These two mounting styles are not mutually compatible. This means AIS keycaps cannot be mounted on Cherry keyboards, and vice versa.

To determine which mounting style is used on your console, remove a keycap using a keycap puller and compare the underside of the keycap to the images above.

AIS keycaps use an additional 'plunger' component as part of the mounting mechanism, shown above. When mounting AIS keycaps on an AIS keyboard, follow the instructions in this article to properly seat the plunger and prevent the key from coming loose.

AIS keycaps are no longer available for purchase.‡ Instead, consoles with AIS keyboards can be retrofitted to use a Cherry keyboard, allowing compatibility with Cherry-style keycaps. There are several service kits available for this purpose, each of which includes a new keyboard and keycaps along with the hardware and instructions required to perform the retrofit.

Keycap Changes with Software

Keycaps have occasionally been repurposed due to changes in Eos Family software. This has required a handful of replacement keycaps to be issued to coincide with software changes.

Version 3.1.0
  • Ion
    • [Intensity] replaced [Custom]

Encoder Maps were added in this version. The Custom Encoder Map function was moved to a softkey.

Version 3.0.0
  • Eos Ti, Gio, Gio @5, Ion, Ion Xe, Ion Xe 20, Element, Element 2, and Programming Wing
    • [Stage] replaced [Scroll Lock]

Staging Mode was added in this version.  Scroll Lock is now accessed with the key combination [Shift] & [Stage].

Version 2.1.0
  • Element
    • [Tab] replaced [Swap]
    • [Displays] replaced [Browser]

Element gained the ability to use Tabs in this version. The change from [Browser] to [Displays] does not accompany a change in functionality, but matches the [Displays] key on other Eos Family consoles.

Version 1.9.11

    • [Color] replaced [S3]

Softkeys are now accessed by holding [More SK] and pressing the corresponding encoder category key; i.e. [More SK] & [Intensity] for softkey 1.

Version 1.9.8
  • Eos
    • [Shift] replaced [Follow|Hang]
    • [Address|Patch] replaced the blank key next to [Help]
  • Ion
    • [Shift] replaced [Follow|Hang]
  • Element
    • [Shift] replaced [Delay]
    • [Delay] moved up one row to replace [Follow]

The Shift function was added in this version. Follow/Hang is now accessed with the key combination [Shift] & [Delay], or as a softkey with a cue selected on the command line.

Version 1.9.6
  • Ion and Element
    • All keycaps changed from a flat, beveled style ("Flat") to a curved style ("CSL").

There were no changes related to keycap functionality in this version; the keycap change is purely cosmetic.

Version 1.9.0
  • Ion
    • [Tab] replaced [Swap]

Ion gained the ability to use Tabs in this version.

Version 1.4.0
  • Eos Classic
    • [High|Low] replaced [Relate]
    • [Fan] replaced the blank key next to [Relate]

The Highlight function was added in this version. The Relate function was not yet implemented in software when its key was removed.
