Replacing the DMX Chip on a Net3 2-port Gateway
Issue
One of the ports on my Net3 2-port gateway is showing as active, but there is no output from the DMX port.
Explanation of Issue
This is often indicative of a failed DMX chip. This is a component which can be swapped in the field, though it takes a bit of doing.
Solution
The information in this post is provided to assist in troubleshooting. Perform work at your own risk. ENSURE ANY POWER FROM DEVICES HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED BEFORE SERVICING ANY EQUIPMENT. If you do not feel comfortable performing the work, please contact us or your local service center. Be aware that ETC and its Affiliates are not responsible for any damage or injury caused by service of our products by anyone other than us or our authorized service providers, and such damage is excluded from the product’s warranty.
Tools required:
- #2 Phillips screwdriver, ideally with a magnetic end
- chip puller or needlenose pliers (optional)
| 1. Remove the 2 screws from the bottom of the gateway (would normally be in the circled empty holes) and remove the gateway from the wall or back box. | ![]() |
| 2. Remove the screws around both DMX connectors. | ![]() |
| 3. Remove the 4 screws (2 on each side, one side pictured) holding the main board to the housing, then remove the assembly from the housing. There will be a lot of wiggling involved. | ![]() |
| 4. Grip the top board with one hand and bottom with the other, then pull them apart as straight as possible (not pictured: right hand) | ![]() |
| 5. Using your fingers, pliers, chip puller, or other suitable tool, remove the DMX chip for the port that is not outputting — it will be on the same side as the physical port. Then remove the spare chip (looks the same as the others but is on its own) and swap it into the position of the chip with an issue. NOTE: There is a small, shiny dot on each chip — ensure that you keep that dot in the same orientation when you insert the spare into the slot. |

| 6. Reverse the steps above to reassemble the gateway. When you put the 2 boards back together, it is advisable to line up all the pins in their holes first before you apply pressure to make the connection. These pins are fragile and can bend extremely easily. | |
| 7. Test output on the reassembled gateway. If this does not resolve your issue, contact ETC technical services. If it does help, order a new spare chip from the link below. |
