ColorSource Boot Issues

Stuck at Starting Screen

Symptoms/Issue

The ColorSource console is getting stuck at the Starting screen
Bump LEDs are on and scrolling white, left to right
Attempting to delete show file data in the manufacturing app results in the progress bar getting stuck and never moving

Explanation of Issue

There are two causes for this issue. Either the FLASH chip has failed, or one or more DDR memory chips have failed. Most often, this issue is due to failing FLASH.

Show data is stored in FLASH. Should the FLASH fail, the console cannot access the show data, which gives the appearance that the show data has become corrupted. Deep clearing or deleting show data will not work in this case because FLASH cannot be accessed

Are my shows still OK?
If the FLASH has failed, then no. Recovering show files from a failed FLASH chip is impossible

Fix/Solution

  • Please contact ETC Technical Services

Stuck at ETC Logo, No LED Scroll

Symptoms

The ColorSource console is stuck at the ETC Logo
No bump LEDs are on

Explanation of Issue

The console's co-processor has failed

Are my shows still OK?
Show data is very likely still intact and may be recoverable through manufacturing tools at ETC. These tools will be able to recover show files and configuration data. For AV consoles, media is also able to be recovered

Note that the co-processor controls bumps and bump LEDs. Because of this, going into the manufacturing menu will not be possible

Fix/Solution

  • Please contact ETC Technical Services

Stuck at ETC Logo, LEDs Chasing Purple/Magenta

Symptoms

The console will not fully boot. The LCD will display the ETC Logo but not the ColorSource logo
During the boot process, the face panel LEDs scroll from left to right and continue looping purple/magenta
The console reboots and this process starts over

Explanation of Issue

The boot process is getting stuck trying to load the kernel. This usually indicates a problem with the DDR memory chips

Are my shows still OK?
Very likely, yes. Show files are stored in FLASH memory and are unlikely to be affected

Fix/Solution

  • Please contact ETC Technical Services

Stuck at ETC Logo, LEDs Chasing Dark Blue

Symptoms

The console will not fully boot
During the boot process, the face panel LEDs scroll from left to right and continue looping dark blue
The console reboots and this process starts over

Explanation of Issue

The console could not start the OS, services, or application
This typically indicates corruption of the firmware

Are my shows still OK?
Yes, show files should still be OK. Show files are stored in FLASH memory and are likely to be unaffected

Fix/Solution

  • Please contact ETC Technical Services

Not Booting, LCD is Dark

Symptoms

LCD is dark, no image on LCD
No bump LED scroll pattern
Not booting
Internal LEDs are on
Console may appear to not power on

Explanation of Issue

This problem is usually indicative of one or more failed DRAM chips

Are my shows still OK?
Very likely, yes. Show files are stored in FLASH memory and are unlikely to be affected

Stuck in Boot Loop, Reboots at Starting... Screen

Important-Icon.png

This is a bug that was resolved in software version 2.5.0. After following the instructions below, please update your console to 2.5.0 or above to keep this from recurring

Symptoms

The ColorSource console is rebooting
LED scrolls from left to right and changes color as normal, but when it gets to the Starting... screen, the console fails and reboots on its own
Boot loop continues indefinitely

Explanation

There is a bug that existed on ColorSource consoles that were running older application versions that can cause this issue to occur. Below is a way to temporarily fix this issue. The way to finally resolve this issue is to update your console to version 2.5.0 or higher

Fix/Solution

This process will completely remove your current show files. Please make sure to have your show files backed up on a USB Flash Drive

  1. While the console is completely powered off and unplugged, press and hold down the four center bump buttons under the touch screen
    1. These will be buttons 2, 3, 4, and 5
  2. Continue holding down the four center buttons and plug in the console
  3. When the bump buttons begin to chase from right to left, the four center buttons can be released
  4. The console will now boot into the Manufacturing Test Menu. Press the "Service - CAUTION" button on the touch screen
  5. Press the "Erase Show Data" button on the touch screen. Again, this will erase your show files. Please be sure they are backed up on a USB Flash Drive
  6. Once the process has completed, exit out of the Service Screen and Manufacturing Test Menu. The console will reboot and should now boot fully into the main application

ColorSource Console LED Boot Pattern

The ColorSource console has specific boot-up patterns that are displayed via the RGB LED indicators in the fader bumps and six main bump buttons below the LCD. They can be used to track which step the console is in during the boot process

Normal Boot

LEDs running Left to Right (>>>)

  1. Cyan (Bootloader)
    1. ETC Logo will be displayed on the LCD
  2. Magenta (OS starting)
    1. ColorSource or ColorSource AV will be displayed on the LCD
  3. Yellow (Services starting, brief)
    1. ColorSource or ColorSource AV will be displayed on the LCD
  4. White (Starting application)
    1. ColorSource or ColorSource AV will be displayed on the LCD
    2. LCD will change to say "Starting..."
  5. Chase stops. Fader LEDs turn off
    1. Application loaded and console is in normal operating mode

Normal Boot - No Chase/All LEDs OFF

No LEDs are scrolling

  • Coprocessor is being reprogrammed
  • Leave for at least 10 minutes to see if console boots. If the console does not boot, see (Stuck at ETC Logo, No LED Scroll)

Normal Boot - LEDs Chase Dark Blue

LEDs are scrolling, but are dark blue. Can happen any time during the booting process

  • Critical error scroll pattern. Could not start the OS, services, or application
  • Attempt to reload firmware using USB recovery

Test Application Boot

LEDs running Right to Left (<<<)

  1. Cyan (Boot Loader)
    1. ETC Logo will be displayed on the LCD
  2. Magenta (OS starting)
    1. LCD will briefly go dark then ColorSource or ColorSource AV will be displayed
  3. Yellow (Services starting, brief)
    1. LCD will display ColorSource or ColorSource AV
  4. White (Starting application)
    1. LCD will briefly go dark
  5. Chase stops. Fader LEDs go off (test application running)
    1. Manufacturing test screen will appear on screen

While Console is Running

LEDs scrolling yellow, Left to Right (>>>)

  • Console is about to reboot
  • May be seen after firmware update (must reboot to complete installation), or after a software crash
  • If this is seen during normal operation, it may have been caused by a software crash
    • If problem persists, please retrieve log files prior to contacting ETC Technical Services
