How To Setup Touch OSC and Hog 4

Guide to Setting Up Wireless Remote Focus Unit (RFU) Using Touch OSC and Hog4 Console

This guide will explain the step by step process to set up Touch OSC software on an external device to use as an RFU with a console. Touch OSC software is a 3rd party tool. High-End Systems does not create the OSC software, but does provide templates for Hog4 users to download and communicate with Hog4 devices. These templates are editable and can be configured by users to best fit their system.

Hog4 series console or Hog4 PC with wing or widget
Wireless router
Apple or Android device

Step 1: Download items

  1. Touch OSC for your Apple or Android device
  2. Hog4 Touch OSC Templates (Website
    1. Note IPhone and iPad template will work with android devices
  3. (Optional) Touch OSC Editor (Found under the “Downloads” tab)

Step 2: Add Templates to your device

      2. If on Android tablet select from “iPad” folder
    6. To use your device as an RFU, you will need the “Hardware” Template or the “All” template if on a tablet

Step 3: Configure Hardware

  1. Wi-Fi Router
    1. Connect a wireless router to your HogNet port on the console
      1. If running Hog4 PC plug the router into your PC network
      2. It is not recommended to have anything else on this network other than other Hog4 consoles, or hardware from High End Systems like DP8000s. A network switch may be required depending on your setup.
  2. Console (choose DHCP or Static IP)
    1. DHCP IP (Basic, recommended if no other devices are on the network)
      1. Navigate to control panel [Setup](Control Panel) (HogNet)
      2. Select “Obtain IP address using DHCP”
      3. The console will now receive an IP address from the router
    2. Static IP (Advanced, recommended if you already have DHCP server on your network, or if other devices are already on the network)
      1. Navigate to control panel [Setup] (Control Panel) (HogNet)
      2. Select “Static IP”
      3. Configure your console, and other preexisting devices on you network to be in range of each other

      4. Configure your router for a static IP within the range of your console network. Refer to your router’s manual for steps to configure
      5. Connect your device to the Wi-Fi router, and set a custom Ip that is within the range of your network. The steps to do this will be different from device to device

Step 4: Configuring Software

  1. Console
    1. Open the network window [Setup](Network)
    2. Right click on the console, select (Settings)
    3. Select the “Open Sound Control” tab.

      5. Press (Done)

Your device should now be working with your console!

Troubleshooting tips

  1. Restart your console and your device, to allow for network changes to fully apply
  2. Ensure that all settings carried through after the restart
    1. Control Panel: HogNet
    2. Network, Console: Open Sound Control
    3. Device Settings: Touch OSC
  3. Remove any other devices from the network non-essential to lighting.
  4. Hog4 PC
    1. Disable Wi-Fi if the Pc is directly plugged into the router.
  5. Highly recommended to be on the most recent version of Hog4 software.
  6. The console must be on
  7. Some Wi-Fi routers have a limited IP range, refer to the routers manual for any limitations.

Notes:

  1. Touch OSC Encoders will not work if connected to a Hog4 PC system without any hardware attached. (NanoHog, Hoglet, Wing, or unlocked ETCnomad key)
  2. Wi-Fi can be unreliable, and your device may be disconnected from the network if the connection is lost or unreliable.
  3. The templates provided, do not have DMX testing capability. OSC cannot control specific addresses in a particular universe. See, “DMX Test” in the console
  4. OSC does have limitations, it is not meant intended to be used as an alternative to hardware, just as a tool.
